Xpoze Monthly Valentine Issue Interview & Photo Shoot – BTS

For their February Valentine issue, Xpoze Monthly decided to do a cover, interview and feature couple photo shoot of my wonderful husband Ali Safina and I.

Let’s just say there is about 12 – 13 pages of in-depth Q&As and well.. lots of photos. **TMI ALERT**

Luckily my other partner in crime was the one photographing us. Wild guesses? Yep… Zara Tareen.

This is us(Zara, Myself, & Ali Safina) at NPRO waiting for my hair to get done. Zamin from NPRO did my make-up & hair, he’s really good. (The phone cover was a gift from my Mom. You can find more like this at http://www.katespade.com/accessories-tech/ks-accessories-tech,en_US,sc.html )

Here are some selfies of the process and after the make-up. The hair is still missing the crazy amounts of backcombing and product.

My #BridalMakeup by Natasha Salon

In case you guys missed it. Here are the pics once again of me at Natasha Salon right before heading out to my Rukhsati and then my Valima the following day.

The ladies (Natasha & Sabrina) were jam-packed at their salon but still gave me proper time & service in making me feel beautiful right before my big day. And I just love all the different ideas they have for hair do’s! Feels like playing dress-up back in the childhood days. Lots of fun! Thanks again ladies if you are reading this!

Here are the pics. Which look do you like better?

EXCLUSIVE BTS – #ZoeViccaji ‘Tanhai’ Music Video Styling Part 1: Concert Scene

Lately, the soulful and sweet voice of Zoe Viccaji is not only making waves in the Pakistani music scene, but also across the border. She has recently been signed on by Universal Records in India to release her very first album. And to say that we are extremely proud of her, would be an understatement!!! She recently shot her music video for her track ‘Tanhai’ in which I was lucky enough to do her make-up/hair & styling. Zoe is a good friend and a wonderful human being, so it was great working with her.

The award-winning and talented Adnan Malik is the Director of the video and had a clear-cut vision of how the treatment of the video should be which lead to numerous meetings about the wardrobe and the overall look for each scene, not to mention constant trips to Mango (who was nice enough to sponsor a lot of the wardrobe pieces)

The mood/styling of the entire video was intentionally quite natural, understated and minimal but one of the most fun scenes to style and do make-up for was the ‘concert’ scene. The story line cannot be revealed just yet, however it is a scene of Zoe as a true rockstar putting the past behind and ‘arriving’ to a happy moment in her musical career and life.

THE MAKE-UP/HAIR
Zoe Viccaji Make-up & Styling by Hira Tareen for Music Video 'Tanhai'

Here are noteworthy products I used for Zoe’s make-up:
Eyes – Revlon Diamond Lust Eyeshadow in ‘Celestial Silver’
Rimmel Long Lasting Lipstick in ‘In Vogue’ which is a cool bright pink (almost red) shade

And for the hair I wanted to achieve a more carefree rockstar look, so we went with a bed head/messy & tousled style.
On damp hair I used a combination of the Rusk Thick Body & Texture Amplifier Spray along with the Sea Spray by Paul Mitchell. Once I applied the sprays, I combed out the hair, took lots of sections, rolled and pinned them up as seen in the photo below:
Zoe Viccaji Hair Styling by Hira Tareen - Tousled look

I let it sit for about 15 minutes or so… then dried it with a diffuser blow dryer thoroughly. After it seemed like it was dry I pulled out the pins… flipped the hair downwards and dried it again to give a volume boost to the hair.

DIY Styling: Shiny Disco Shades

diypage

On Page 26 of the Kayseria Pret ‘Pretalogue’ you will learn how to make your own Disco Shades inspired by Jewelled Sunglasses like the one below.

dolce_gabbana_sunglasses_earrings

490x368

All you need is a pair of well shaped sunglasses with enough room around the frames, a glue gun, small jewel rhinestones, and some square cut out mirrors (that I purchased from Paaras Art Store in Khadda Market, Karachi.)

The rest of the instructions are above (in the first image) and pretty self explanatory.  If you want to improvise you can even use other things like chains, studs, etc.  I used mirrors because it gives more of an ethnic touch and it went well with the styling of the entire Virsa line of Kayseria Pret.

This is a simple and fun way to glam up a pair of old boring shades that you don’t wear anymore. Here are some more images for inspiration. Happy Monday!

FAKE BEAUTY PRODUCTS VOL. 1: Puff or Bluff?

mayfair & yardley london face powder

Recently I purchased some cosmetics from Vicky’s in Khadda Market. Anyone who lives in Karachi (Clifton/Defence) and has purchased quite a few make-up products in the past should be familiar with Vicky’s Cosmetics.

At the counter I asked for Yardley face powder as it’s quite an inexpensive option to reduce shine on the face when it comes to TV or Print projects and yes it works quite well. If you have been involved in any media related projects or come across any make-up artist here, you will find that 90% of them use this face powder.

I was skeptical when two powders which seemed to be of the same make had a different quality applicator. I turned to read the labels and discovered that one claimed to be Mayfair Perfumes London and one was Yardley London.

Both had an almost identical look and feel unless you look closely at the information on the back and the logos in the front. Which is pretty strange, considering that it’s quite rare to have two brands with almost identical packaging.

I dug even deeper into this suspicious situation and discovered that when I google Yardley Cosmetics this is the image I find of the REAL YARDLEY packaging:

Yardley London Pressed Face Powder

AHA! As you can see this looks completely different from the so-called Yardley London Face powder above in the very first picture.

What’s more upsetting is that Vicky’s Cosmetics (where I purchased these products) has a very arrogant and strict policy of a FIXED price as if they are selling only premium and authentic products. And this is not just about Vicky’s Cosmetics, this happens in various cosmetic stores thru out Pakistan. And make-up artists are okay with purchasing these items without questioning because yes it does the trick for quick fixes, maybe because it’s not going on their face, OR they just don’t know any better or haven’t thought twice about it.

To go into further detail I also took photos of the backside of these products. The Mayfair products seem real because I was able to find a website to verify the same product. SEE HERE

fakecosmetics2

So if this packaging is fake and so are the ingredients, the REAL QUESTION here is what exactly are they putting in these fake powders that we are applying to our faces? Chalk, dust, glass particles, KRYPTONITE ? Haha okay that may be a stretch but you never know! There’s no way to really know. All we can do is take a stand, call these people out and NEVER buy fake beauty products again!

Keep checking back on this blog as the hunt continues for FAKE BEAUTY PRODUCTS. I’m on a mission!

Live to Dye

My hair had been black/dark brown for years and I wanted to change my look for 2013 without having to compromise on my hair length. So I thought who better than Nabila to consult with.

I decided that I wanted this ‘dip dye’ thing. Not only because it’s hot right now but also because it can just grow out and I can easily chop the tips if it’s a disaster đŸ˜›

Here are a few pics of the process and then the final look.

My original hair color that I had for years.

My original hair color that I had for years. Bye bye black!

This is where my hair was stripped because I had dark hair dye in it previously.

Here is the final look with a brown on the overall head and the color “milkshake” at the tips (about 4 to 5 inches)

My new Marc Jacobs frames from Ottica

So one fine day as I was trying to buy some plastic chairs near Sean Circle, I noticed there was a eyeglass store next door. Decided to walk in and look around.

Right away I noticed their collection was much better than all the other optical outlets in Karachi so far, and the environment was clean and friendly. Plus I remembered a few weeks back someone messaging me on Facebook and telling me to come to their opening. So I guess Facebook marketing somehow works…sometimes. I figured any store in Pakistan savvy enough to market their opening in a nice way, is worth browsing at least.

Anyhow, I tried on a few different styles and brands but finally found myself with my heart set on these new Purple Marc Jacob’s cat eye style frames.

Service was great, their eye test was very advanced and seemed quite accurate. To my surprise my power had improved from -3.0 to -2.5! Yay!

I got a good price which I will not reveal since I am not sure if they will be able to give that same deal to everyone else. However I still haven’t been able to find the same exact frame online to check the price. Neither did I find some unique model number to check with. That makes me a wonder a lot of things but I am hoping for the best since they look pretty real as far as the quality goes as well as the box they came in. But just to confirm I am going to follow up with them and see if I can get some model number, because it is bothering me a little bit. Ottica if you are reading this blog, please respond to my concern in a comment!

UPDATE: I received a call from Ottica today (a day after I posted this blog) and they were nice enough to contact me after reading this post to inform me that the model number is on the left hand side in a light yellow color which is very hard to see. So here is the official link to the model I got: MJ 375. So I guess that means their customer service is great as well which is quite rare in Pakistan to be honest.

Along with the eyeglasses I got a few more goodies, like cleaning spray, a snazzy Ottica mug and a very cool Ottica eye glass cloth. So I was a happy customer!

Here are a few photos! Do they look good? Horrible? Ok? Comments!

Toni & Guy “Essensuals” Salon Launch in Karachi

Toni & Guy recently held a launch of their sister brand “Essensuals” at the Forum Mall in Karachi, Pakistan. The actual Toni & Guy salon is located in Bath Island, Karachi and is ‘ The largest purpose built TONI&GUY Salon in the World’ which I find pretty damn amazing!

I was one of the five female models along with Iraj, Gia Ali, Sadaf and Monica to participate in the launch event which was organized by Catalyst Events (Frieha Altaf.)

There was an interesting link in this show for me.  The Toni & Guy USA headquarters are in my hometown Dallas, Texas . So to represent the launch of a Toni & Guy Salon in my country of birth was kinda cool. Ok.. at least I thought so.. đŸ˜›

A day before the event I was called in to the salon to get my hair colored and cut by Saeeda Mandviwalla herself (the owner/manager of the salon.) I couldn’t do something way too drastic with my hair because of my ongoing acting commitments, we decided to have chunks of BRIGHT RED in my hair. Yeah.. that’s not drastic at all :-/

I was a bit nervous but excited at the same time. But I think it turned out just fine. I kept it for about a week and then like Amy Winehouse I had to go “back to black” đŸ˜›

Below you can see some pics of the process..

Next day all the models had to show up at the salon again to get their hair finished and styled for the show which was to take place at 5pm at the Forum Mall.

This was probably one of the few ramp/hair shows in Pakistan..which took place in the center of the Mall. At least since I have been here đŸ™‚ The great thing about this was that the general public got a chance to be a part of the audience. Usually events in the fashion industry are very exclusive to the people involved indirectly/directly in the event or then.. the elite. But this gave the masses a chance to see the show live!

Anyways you guys can all see clips of the show at this link! Enjoy and stay tuned for more fun FashionEASTa updates from Pakistan! đŸ™‚

It Makes Perfect Scents!

green_blog
In my previous posts you have read that there are certain songs or sounds I hear that evoke visuals of fashion or just “speak” fashion. I am sure you guys thought I was a weirdo after reading that one but good news is, I am not the only one who thinks this way!

The idea of audio and visuals coming together is something that many musicians, event producers and entertainers have almost perfected. However mixing scents with music is something that has mostly been overlooked  and not explored much until now.

Famous fragrance designer, Christophe Laudamiel ( who has designed for Clinique, Estee Lauder, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, etc.) has coined the idea of a “scent opera.” A performance which pairs music and scent in an interesting way that lets the audience experience various scents based on “perfume chords” accompanied by music. (To read more about how this works, follow the link at the end of this post.)

P1-AP975_ScentP_G_20090519181812

This might sound crazy but it is definitely a step forward into getting people to think about building new and interesting experiences while making use of our five senses.

Hearing about this was particularly interesting for me because I have always been intrigued by the condition called “Synesthesia” Let alone the fact that I have a slight form of this condition myself đŸ™‚

I wonder how long it will be before we are able to smell things while browsing the internet and what this means for various venues that want to start using scents more to evoke certain emotions or to create a particular ambiance.

I know that my friend Dinah Daniel from Mosaic Aromatherapy will be thrilled to hear about this since she specializes in creating custom fragrances for various events and venues.
